File Formating

Advantages to RAW
* No data loss from the camera sensor
* Better highlights and shadows
* Makes better evidence in court
Disadvantages to RAW
* Requires special software to view
* Requires you to process it.
* Less sharp
Advantages to JPEG
* The most readable image
* Sharper
* Higher in contrast
Disadvantages to JPEG
* Dynamic range is lower
* Data loss when manipulated
* Compressed

1. Under the first heading "Capturing the Images," how much of the data does a RAW file retain after it is captured by the camera?

All of it. The image isn't processed in the camera so there is no data loss at all

2. Under the second heading "Processing the Files," what are some of the things that a RAW file enables a photographer to edit after the image is taken?

Highlights, shadows, colors and contrast.

3. Under the third heading "Practicalities," what are some of the factors that photographers must consider when deciding to shoot in RAW?

That the images are larger, it's possible your camera doesn't support it and that you can turn a RAW to JPEG but not the other way around.

4. Under the fourth heading "Which one is for you?" why would an aspiring professional photographer need to know how to work with RAW files?

Editing is very important to photography and RAW gives you much better editing options.

1. Which file formats discussed have you used in the past?
JPEG, PSD, RAW, PNG, GIF, AI.
2. What is the difference between a Raster and a Vector file?
Raster has it's pixels set, while vectors can be resized without change because it uses math, not pixels.

.jpeg, .tiff, .psd, and either .dng (Canon) or .nef (Nikon)
1. Is this format lossy or lossless?
JPEG: Lossy TIFF: Lossless PSD: Lossless. NEF: Lossless.
2. What are common uses for each? By this I mean where would I publish each of them for the highest quality.
JPEG: Storage is transfer across the web TIFF: Used by graphic artists for raster graphics. PSD: Working or editing Photoshop file NEF: A RAW format for Nikon. Edited in Lightroom.
3. Can you create this type of file in your camera?
JPEG: Yes TIFF: Yes PSD: No NEF: Yes
